l. The Mercy Argument, which states that the immense pain and indignity
of prolonged suffering cannot be ignored. We are being inhumane to force people to continue suffering in this way.

ans. Dr.s can be there with sufficient amounts of pain killers, even to the point of addicting the patient. Not a very good argument. IMHO

2. The Patient's Right to Self-determination. Patient empowerment has been a trend for more than twenty-five years. "It's my life, my pain. Why can't I get the treatment I want?"
Ans. You can by signing a medical directive to not sustain life "at any costs" takes it out of the hand of a Dr.

3. The Economics Argument, which notes that the cost of keeping people alive is exceedingly high. Who's footing the bill for the thousands of people being sustained in a persistent vegetative state? Aren't we wasting precious resources when an already used up life is prolonged unnecessarily?
Ans. Aren't we wasting precious life by letting the homeless starve on the streets? How many are really in this persistent vegetative state against there will in the US. I really have no idea?

4. The Reality Argument runs like this: "Let's face it, people are already doing it."
Ans. I bet that is what Hitler and Mengle thought...

If one wants to end there life due to a major non-curative illness I have no problem with that. I don't think that Dr's. or lawyers need to be in the picture. I plan to have my own means available if the time comes. I have a medical directive stating not to revive me in the event the question arises. We need to be responsible and have our affairs in order before the need arises. Just my thoughts
