EUROPEAN
BROADBAND
BOOM IMMINENT
Anew report from Internet
research body Jupiter MMXI
says that Europe is heading
for a broadband Internet boom
and that it will happen next year.
According to Jupiter’s predictions,
European domestic broadband
penetration will double, and in
some countries even triple, during
2002.
The report says that Sweden
and Belgium will continue to lead
the European broadband race
with penetration next year reaching
18% and 12% respectively.
Meanwhile, the number of households
with broadband access will
triple in Italy and the U.K. during
2002. The Netherlands is expected
to come in third with 10% broadband
penetration levels by
December next year.
Mind you, the UK starts from a
very low level. Fewer than 250,00
people (that’s less than1% of the
British population) presently have
access to domestic broadband
connections. Thus, even if the
Jupiter’s predictions are correct
the UK will still languish well
down the European broadband
league with considerably fewer
than a million users. However, the
square-eyed UK does boast the
highest penetration of digital television
in the world.
The report also says that
broadband penetration across the
whole of Europe will not achieve
the ‘critical mass’ figure of 15%
of homes until 2006 at the very
earliest. So it’s going to be a long,
slow old haul. _
