Re: how, pray tell, can Intel have 4 times the unit market share of AMD and only sell 3x the number of units of AMD?

Is this your new QuantiMath at work, Dan3?

Intel is too embarrassed by it's steadily dropping market share numbers to release them - AMD, of course, is thrilled with its numbers of the past few years and is proud to announce them.

All we know (from the 10-Qs) is that Intel has been spending 9.5 times as much on wafer capacity as AMD, in order to achieve that 3 to 4 times sales.

PS - I know arithmetic isn't your strong suite, so remember that 20% vs. 80% would be 4 times sales and 25% vs. 75% would be 3 times sales. The most recent statement on share from anyone was from an AMD marketing guy in Taiwan who claimed a 27% share for AMD. My guess is that was referring to a segment, rather than total market.

But if it was total market, and if VIA got 6% of the unit market, then Intel is down to 2/3's of the market, and their unit sales ratio relative to AMD is approaching 2 to 1 - while their market cap is 42 times that of AMD.
