Syl, if you're holding JDSU, JNPR, CIEN, or some other loser you want to sell at your end of year portfolio balancing party, you need something profitable to offset the losses. MSFT was up over 50% this year, so it fits the bill quite well.

MSFT is in a lot of portfolios, and I believe it could be a very effective tool in recouping tax losses against gains. That is why I believe this is happening. MSFT is about the only large cap tech I looked at this weekend that has a descending daily chart. I think that turns up after January 1st.

In a cap-weighted portfolio, selling your MSFT can undo a lot of damage and save some cap gains taxes.
