Wink: Using Infoseek, I found 5 hits on the Net for "Wink ITV" or "Wink Interactive Communicating Application Protocol" (a designation used in 1995 press releases about Wink's product). One of those links took me to Wink's home page at wink.com
After reading the long piece you posted, I still had no clear idea of Wink's technology or function. And I was interested in the lack of reference to NBC's Web tech partner MSFT, or MSFT's WebTV acquisition or the MSFT investment in Comcast. So, I tried to learn more at www.wink.com. At that address, I found a nice, graphical site with further links to a news page, and further info about the company and its 'compact client-server technology.'
At the wink.com site, I suffered through some slow loads and time outs to find rather little information about it. Their "Wink Technology History" at wink.com contained some hyperbole mixed in with precious few facts, summarizing the entire first two years of its existence thus:
"1993 Wink lab commences work on what will become the Wink standard for enhanced broadcasting
1994 Wink continues work in secret on standard for enhanced broadcasting"
The history gets a bit more detailed for the next two years, but ends in 1996.
The 'Strategic Partners' list was distinquished by a lack of reference to any but Japanes companies. No reference to MSFT, NSCP, Java, ORCL, MOT, even though Wink is involved in wireless telecom solutions. wink.com
The contact list at wink.com indicates Brian P. Dougherty is Wink's Chairman and Chief Technical Officer, while continuing as Chairman at Geoworks. They suggest writing for further information to info@wink.com
By contrast, an Infoseek search on 'Wavephore' turned up 137 hits. 'Wavetop' 15 hits.
