Jay,

while there are lots of "talk" about how bad things are this Christmas, the facts appear to show that we are doing as good or better than last year. In addition, the online retailers appear to be be doing much better also. I don't have all the releases but I think Williams Sonoma, Land's End and others claimed post Sept 11 business as brisk.

So are the consumers consuming or not?

On the other hand, if the retailers are stimulating sales with deep discounts, similar to the autos with zero percent financing, then the merchandise sold may only carry slim to no profit. This would not only show up on the bottomline this quarter but also for quarters to come, assuming consumers might have stocked up on a mountain socks, ties and sweaters that are priced too low to resist.

But if we are strictly talking about the US stock market, does it really matter that the retail sector is good or bad?

In this day and age of globalization, where can investors from all over the world park their money? What would trigger an exodus of funds from US equites and other instruments?
