THE 3G DILEMMA
Some telco's introducing 3G will use Enhanced Data for GSM Evolution (EDGE) to deliver 3G networks providing a maximum rate of 384Kbps - "but only if you are the only person using the network in a clear field and standing near a cell tower" quips Dataquests McGuire who suggests that 3G users will get access only in the order of 56Kbps with 3G.
4G WILL DELIVER
Centered on W-OFDM (Wideband Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) developed by Wi-Lan Inc of Canada, based on IEEE standard 802.11A and patented in the USA, W-OFDM based 4G systems allows data to be encoded on multiple high speed radio frequencies concurrently, allowing for greater security, increased data volumes and provides more efficient use of the bandwith through multipoint networks. Operating in the unlicensed 2.4 Ghz frequency band, the technology will enable Galactic Solutions to deliver to Pizza Station customers, free unlicensed access to broadband communications that will enhance internet browsing and content enjoyment. Further advances in technology will enable greater spectral efficiency through using less bandwith, thereby reducing congestion.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the USA has licensed the sale of W-OFDM products in the United States for use in the development of point to point and multi point installations required for the development of a packet switched wireless broadband network using wireless ethernet bridges in the point to point expansion of the network. While the Galactic Solutions network will be free to Pizza Station customers, the network will have commercial leveraging capabilities, especially in the SME sector. This leveraging is enhanced by the availability of license exempt spectrum at speeds ranging from 128Kbps to 4.5Mbps through a packet based local loop system capable of integrating through traditional fiber for national and international connectivity.
The forthcoming switch from GSM to Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) wireless standards will permit seamless mergers between competing wireless communications systems. This will enable users of mobile devices to freely roam from one standard to another.
The highly decentralized IP systems are not suited to 3G for the reason that 3G is highly Network-centric system compared to the less costly "hotspot" wireless network offered by 4G. 4G - wireless broadband based on seamless roaming technology - the new way to catch and keep the customers of the future in a world where wireless technology is generating the ability to create real "see feel and touch" commercial activity - not just "subscriber" based revenues.
