Mary, the worst part is that many of these people are very lonely and happy just to hear the phone ring. The con men take advantage of this, spending as much time as necessary to become their "friends". It's sick.

When trying to comprehend how people can be so cruel I think about the science experiment where people were asked to give what they were told were painful electrical shocks to people who pretended to be the actual subjects. When they could see the subjects and their reaction to the shocks they were very much less likely to increase the voltage than when they could only hear them. Part of their punishment should be to have to apologize face to face with their victims and spend some time with them so they can get a sense of their victim's pain. It's really astounding how little jail time these type of con men get considering the devastation they impart.

The problem is that the boiler rooms have figured out ways to make their sales pitch more legally ambiguous. Now, instead of promoting shares in something like a bogus oil field, they hawk something "real", such as your own mall on the Internet or a 30 minute way to make easy money like what Genesis (GENI) did. Speaking of which, even though the stock is now in hibernation, the dialing for dollars continues.
