Agouron down as market awaits Viracept data

LOS ANGELES, June 30 (Reuter) - Shares of Agouron Pharmaceuticals Inc fell sharply in what analysts speculated was due to concern over the upcoming release of quarterly sales data of its Viracept AIDS drug.

However, most analysts also said they expected the data to be strong.

The sales data for the quarter ended June 30 will include the first quarterly figures on Viracept, the protease inhibitor made by Agouron that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved in March.

Agouron shares fell 2-7/8 to 81-3/4.

``In general terms it appears Agouron will go through some significant price volatility as people scrutinize the launch of Viracept,'' said Mehta and Isaly analyst Edmund Debler, who added, ``We're very comfortable with the way the (Viracept) launch has gone.''

Protease inhibitors have dramatically changed the treatment of AIDS and when used in combination with other drugs have been shown to drive viral load down to nondetectable levels in thousands of patients.

While a number of companies make protease inhibitors, Viracept has been found to be better tolerated than some of the others. Debler said the protease inhibitors made by Agouron and Merck and Co Inc (MRK) appear to be the leaders in the field.
