In 1492, Spanish Jews were given a choice: convert to Catholicism or leave Spain. Many left. Others stayed, and many of them continued to practice the Jewish faith in secret. If caught, they were turned over to the Inquisition. What happened next varied. Sometimes if they confessed and would agree to practice only Catholicism, they were released. More often, they were executed, usually by hanging. If they would not confess and give names of accomplices, they were tortured. Many died under torture. If they confessed under torture, the usual practice was to strangle them, then burn them at the stake. If they would not confess, they were burned at the stake- -alive.
Oh, the actual executions were carried out by civil authorities. The Church didn't want to get its hands bloody. The Church claiming no responsibility in this matter would be like Hitler claiming no responsibility for the Final Solution because the SS did the actual killing.
You like this? I'd suggest Afghanistan or Iran. Saudi Arabia might be OK, too. Here in the US, there's a problem- -the First Amendment. |
