Left to its own devices, I think the EU would squeeze out some excesses in the French and German economies.
The french and germans are dragging with both feet on any internal eform. They want to screw the states that are competitive, Spain, Greece, Portugal, Ireland and Finland?

Selfish national interests see this increase in these smaller countries as helping alien countries. They are not yet thinking like a union.
Of course, remember the 13 states, it took them a while and they still fight.
