QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies-Enabled 3G CDMA2000 1X Handsets Shipping to North American Operators
Manufacturers Roll Out Wireless Products Based on QCT's MSM5105 Chipset and System Software to Support 3G Services
SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 2, 2002-- QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM - news), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced that CDMA operators in North America have begun receiving volume shipments of a range of third-generation (3G) CDMA2000 1X products, based on the QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies (QCT) MSM5105(TM) Mobile Station Modem (MSM(TM)) chipset, system software and integrated applications software. The CDMA2000 1X products -- from a number of global manufacturers including AirPrime, GTRAN, Kyocera, LG, Novatel Wireless, Samsung, Sanyo and Sierra Wireless -- include Internet-enabled handsets, Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) data cards and data modules. Many of these manufacturers are rolling out multiple models based on the MSM5105 chipset. CDMA2000 1X devices, based on QCT's chipsets and Wireless Internet Launchpad(TM) applications software suite, support packet data rates of up to 153 kilobits per second (kbps). These devices enable a variety of features, including dual-band and tri-mode radio configurations, color displays, dual display, MIDI ringers, Internet access, two-way short message service (SMS), voice-activated dialing and speaker phone compatibility.

New CDMA2000 1X handsets will offer talk times from 2.5 to 3.8 hours and standby times from 230 to 350 hours, and are extremely lightweight, ranging from 99 to 123 grams, depending on the type of battery used.
New data products addressing packet data and Mobile Internet protocol (IP) capabilities are also being rolled out, with PCMCIA Type II cards from manufacturers such as Sierra Wireless (Sierra Wireless AirCard® 550/555) that will support data speeds of up to 153 kbps and will integrate with Microsoft Windows®-powered notebooks and handheld devices. Other manufacturers expected to roll out CDMA2000 1X data products include AirPrime (AirPrime Helium 1X(TM) wireless module family), GTRAN (DotSurfer(TM) with single- and dual-band versions) and Novatel Wireless (Merlin C201(TM)).
The MSM5105 solution, QCT's mid-tier product in its 3G CDMA2000 1X MSM product portfolio, was designed specifically to provide handset manufacturers and operators with the most cost-effective 3G CDMA2000 1X solutions for network deployments. The MSM5105 solution is based on the industry-proven IS-95 MSM3100(TM) chipset architecture, and is fully pin-compatible with MSM3100-based IS-95A/B designs. In addition to enabling an approximate doubling of voice capacity in CDMA2000 1X networks, the MSM5105 chipset integrates QCT Wireless Internet Launchpad suite of applications, including Compact Media Extension (CMX(TM)) Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI)-based multimedia services, Removable User Identity Module (R-UIM) interface, streaming video, file transmission, and Web browsing. The MSM5105 solution also supports QUALCOMM's Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless(TM) (BREW(TM)) applications platform.
Availability of CDMA2000 1X products and the 3G services they support will depend on the deployment schedules of individual system operators throughout North America.
