Quid, you asked...

1) What leads you to favor the Canon models?

They are of sturdy design and share the same lens apparatus as Sony, Nikon, Olympus and Epson. These are all reportedly of Zeiss origin. I find Canon's cameras most substantial (weight and construction) of all and that is just a personal preference.

The G1 has a extremely high resolution, vivid monitor which can be protected from scratches with the camera body during storage. An excellent monitor is needed for image deletion on longer vacations.

Finally, the Canon G2 uses an R-G-B filtering system and sensor rather than a C-M-Y-G filter/sensor set up. This is supposed to give superior color rendition, especially for skin tones, according to reviews I have read.

2) Is there any lens superiority as among the Canon, Olympus and Nikon models? Any clear favorites as to telefoto/zoom and focus features?

I believe that the lenses are similar, if not identical, between the brands you mention, although some of the more compact models use a totally different lens system.

I have not had the need to purchase any lens accessories, but I believe them to be relatively limited compared to the selection you might find for an SLR.

3) <Given your> insight as to deficiencies in Casio software, is the software on the others about on a par with each other.

The Casio camera I purchased and returned utilized software which was different from my prior user experience. I found it yielded less appealing images.

4) Finally, are these models (Canon, Olympus and Nikdon) all pretty comparable in terms of taking added memory with SM or CF cards?

Yes.
