re Calif, no blackouts this past summer
I think the reason probably was two new Calpine generator plants
each one was about 500 megawatts
one in NoCalif by SanFran
one in SoCalif by LA
now Calif not so vulnerable as other states, like NY
outside Chicago a nuke plant was approved to go online
cannot remember the company name
so the edge is being maintained

here are some facts off the top of head, read last week
USA produces 38% less oil than it did in 1973
USA imported 35% of its oil in 1973, now 57% today
USA produces 1/3 less in Alaska now than in mid-80's

watch the political pressure to produce more oil in North America
the shipping lanes are at risk in the MidEast

Althabasca Oil Sands in Alberta contain 25,000 sqmiles of supply
with reachable 300 billion barrels of oil equivalent
that is more reserves than US and Russia combined
oilsands cost per barrel has gone from $22 in 1980 to $11 today
Suncor (SU) owns it all

look north, young man, look north
the oil problem will be solved by Canada: Alberta, Maritimes
eh? jim
