I'm sure that the HMOs would want that kind of policy. I'm just not sure how many physicians feel very strongly about certain "name brand" drugs versus the generic drug. I may be wrong, but I think there are a few specific prescriptions that physicians don't want to see substituted with generic drugs because from their experience they've obtained better results using the specific drug prescribed. Some prescription pads used by physicians have a place on the form to check that the generic brand may not be substituted.

Patients also seem to be more programmed to request specific name brand drugs now that prescription drugs are being advertised on T.V. and in magazines.
