David Remnick on Peres

The latest issue of The New Yorker, dated January 7th, has an absorbing essay on Peres by the editor, David Remnick. Well worth the effort to get a copy of the issue. But it should be online in the next few days. They usually post a week behind publishing.

Remnick's portraits are among the best. He strives to keep the rough edges of interpretation in the text. You will find completely contradictory conclusions about the character (his overriding interest) of someone he interviews sitting right alongside one another. Without a resolution. It's a little like the process of making friendships with a stranger--you learn different things without an immediate resolution.

That's his strength. It's also his weakness. He rarely resolves the contradictions into some synthesis of a conclusion. Perhaps it's just as well since anyone doing interviews actually knows very little about another's character.
