Hi all; Taiwanese DRAM makers launch fund-raising programs:

Major DRAM makers to launch fund-raising programs
Financial Times Limited, January 3, 2002
In order to stay competitive in the field, several major DRAM makers in Taiwan, including Nan Ya Technology Corp., ProMos Technologies Inc., and Powerchip Semiconductor Corp. are reportedly to raise new funds to finance expansion projects this year

Industry sources said yesterday that Germany-based-Infineon has first mass produced its 12-inch DRAM products and Taiwanese counterparts have to follow suit quickly. Accordingly, it is a must for local DRAM makers to seek new funds to meet challenges from the new DRAM era. For example, Nan Ya Technology, the first local maker that has already mass produced its DDR (double data rate) DRAM in the fourth quarter of 2001, decided to issue NT$6 billion worth of GDRs (global depository receipts) in 2002. Most of the capital will be used for the expansion of new facilities, thus strengthening its competitiveness in the line

Powerchip Semiconductor expects to continue the establishment of its new 12-inch wafer foundry plant. The key competitiveness of DRAM makers will rely on 12-inch plants in the future, Tsai Kou-chih, company president, said

Meanwhile, Powerchip Semiconductor's existing 8-inch plant will be switched for the manufacture of DDR DRAM by the end of 2002. The firm estimates the capital expenditure will total NT$20 billion for the purpose

ProMos Technologies, which is a joint venture of Mosel Vitelic Group of Taiwan and Infineon, expects to soon conduct mass production at its 12-inch plant. The local DRAM giant is now considering to issue US$200 million in GDRs to finance the expansion of its 12-inch plant.
