I always understood this idea as more of a long-term thing, sort of a war of attrition to increase marketshare at the cost of margins (and possibly earnings), and once the marketshare (and thus credibility) had increased high enough, a corner would be turned and AMD would be able to increase margins at will. That corner was supposedly the magic number of 30% marketshare, which we've heard repeated over and over, and we all know they haven't reached. Perhaps they still will. It's going to be interesting. I don't see the lack of profitability for last quarter and probably this quarter as a failure on AMD's part, just the execution of a plan which would have been a much more profitable one during a bubble economy.
