It's interesting that AMD's retail vanishing act coincided almost exactly with their ModelHurtz scheme. As I guessed at the time, OEM's and retailers probably didn't want to confuse and deceive the consumer.

I finally saw my first Athlon XP system at best buy on December 31st.

It was an 1800+ system... first line of the system features indicated that the processor ran at 1.53GHz. Looks like the OEM's are really quite leery of the "return of PR."
