If you don't care what you spend and you want to get the very best, buy a board with the Voodoo Rush chipset. It's the fastest 3D available, and has pretty good (although not the best) 2D.
If money is a consideration, Diamond and/or STB should be shipping S3 GX/2 boards next month (I think...if anybody knows for sure, please chime in). This board will have the fastest 3D out there right now (besides the 3dfx boards), faster than the ATI boards.
As far as S3 being the leader, you thought right, depending on what you were asking. It depends on what kind of leader you are asking about: 2D, 3D, volume of chips shipped, bang-for-buck are all categories with different criteria and different leaders. S3 leads 2 or 3 of them, depending on your personal interpretation of the facts.
