The idea of a well-paid high-ability voluntary military service appeals to me. The idea of conscripts is unappealing

Maurice,
we will just have to disagree on that one.
the threat is enormous. the stakes are very high for everyone. every citizen has something to lose now...but they will remain largely complacent until they have their own or a family member's life at risk.
i remain convinced that universal service will get us universal concern and interest in the training, equipment and well-being of our forces.
in turn, that concern will lead to greater political interest in the military and the greater issue of the well-being of the country.
when a congressman or senator's son comes home on leave and tells daddy that his unit has no training ammunition, or that they removed 1/2 of the light bulbs in the buildings to save money, or that their unit had no money allocated for fuel so they cannot go on exercises, or fly their airplanes the minimum required hours to maintain proficiency...something will change quickly. every one of these scenarios occurred during the previous administration.
