Christopher & Banks has better-than-expected December
sales

Published Jan 4 2002

Christopher & Banks Corp. said Thursday that sales at stores
open at least a year, known as same-store sales, increased 6
percent in December. The Plymouth-based women's clothing
retailer had expected its monthly same-store sales gain to be in
the 3 to 5 percent range.

While many apparel chains struggled through the holiday
season, Christopher & Banks found strong customer demand
and was able to limit markdowns.

"Our December performance was paced by robust sweater
sales, with items featuring winter scenes or patriotic themes
selling particularly well," Chairman and CEO Bill Prange said
in a prepared statement.

The chain's same-store sales increase would have been 9.5
percent had it not been for a fiscal calendar shift that included
more post-Christmas shopping days this year, compared with
2000.

Christopher & Banks total December 2001 sales jumped 34
percent, to $39.8 million. Its stock Thursday closed at $34.39,
down 14 cents.
