A front page story in today’s Wall Street Journal suggests that a new push by the White House to settle the
Justice Department’s tobacco lawsuit may be in the offing. If this is so – and we have not yet been able to
confirm this shift in approach – it is likely to be viewed as a positive for the group.
Since Bush's election we have contended the government's complaint was likely to be settled out of court on
terms the industry would find palatable, though probably later rather than sooner.
