I think that Augie March is a little too pretentious, for one thing. "Herzog" and "Mr. Sammler's Planet" seem to me to be deeper, to deal with crises of meaning more incisively.

I don't think Steinbeck is a good enough writer, off hand.

Unfortunately, I have not read many of the Southern writers, or have only read some of their short stories. I have, of course, read some of the Agrarians, though, again, mostly stories and poems. I have read some stories of Eudora Welty and others. But not enough to judge their overall significance.....
