re: "completed" UMTS Release 99 - ==========
Subject: Joint RAN1-RAN2 meeting on release 99 planned Feb 5-7 Date: Fri, 4 Jan 2002 14:51:17 -0000 From: [[[[ removed ]]]] To: 3GPP_TSG_RAN_WG1@LIST.ETSI.FR
Dear RAN1 and RAN2 colleagues,
During the last RAN Plenary, it was confirmed that RAN WGs should pursue the release 99 clean-up exercise that was initiated in Sept 01. We remind you that RAN identified several categories of items (incompatible, incomplete, obsolete features) and that actions could be correcting it, removing it from R99 or permanently, and making it optional in release 99.
Also, TSG RAN has sent a LS to TSG-T and TSG-T1 informing them that RAN may input more RABs and RBs in 34.108, for release 99 and later releases. The first priority should obviously be on release 99.
Last, TSG RAN has discussed the concept of optionality for release 99 commercial deployment, and RAN finally agreed to revisit the issue in March 01 based on RAN WGs inputs.
All these subjects can be best handled in a joint activity between RAN1 and RAN2.
In order not to jeopardise the February Orlando meetings where Release 5 CRs need to be agreed, and also in order to be ready for the T1 meeting, it is proposed to have a joint RAN1-RAN2 meeting early February to handle all these subjects.
The meeting will take place 5-7 Feb, with the joint RAN1-RAN2 potentially 5-6 only, in which case RAN2 will finalise the CR on 34.108 the 7th. The location will be Sophia Antipolis, in the ETSI amphitheater.
Invitation and proposed agenda for the 5-7 Feb meeting will be sent shortly, but please note this meeting in your calendar.
RAN1 can inform T1, who has an ad-hoc meeting end January on Rel'99 issues, so that they are aware that a CR on 34.108 is under way in TSG-RAN1 & RAN2 and that such a CR will be provided to T1 after the joint meeting in February.

Nokia, in its recent PR praising the completion of Release 99, must have been misinformed...

When will Release 99 be "complete"?
When will Release 5 be "complete"?
When will HSDPA be commercial?
This decade?
... the folly of technical development by a fundamentally political and arguably corrupt institution...
