EWING, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 4, 2001--"Today's announcement
establishing a joint venture between Sanyo and Kodak for the
development of next generation display technologies bodes well for an
emerging industry which promises to revolutionize computing and
communications over the next decade," according to Sid Rosenblatt,
chief financial officer of Universal Display Corporation. "The
alliance illustrates the rapid development of organic light emitting
devices (OLEDs) and underscores the need of OLED research firms to
work closely with manufacturers to compress the time to market for
these quickly developing technologies."
In that respect, Universal Display Corporation has developed
relationships with a number of leading manufacturers and has announced
joint development agreements with Sony Corporation and Samsung SDI
that will bring to market a range of breakthrough display products
during the next five years.
Universal Display Corporation is one of the leaders in OLED
technology development with a portfolio of more than 400 patents,
issued and pending worldwide. The Company's proprietary phosphorescent
OLED (PHOLED(TM)) technology uses electrophosphorescent materials that
are up to four times more power efficient than conventional
fluorescent small molecule technology. Universal Display Corporation
also has announced a strategic relationship for the commercialization
and production of its proprietary materials with PPG Industries, Inc.
of Pittsburgh, PA. Another example of its innovative technologies is
its partnership with Aixtron AG of Aachen, Germany for the development
of the next generation of OLED production equipment using its
proprietary organic vapor phase deposition technology (OVPD).
"In today's announcement, Sanyo Chairman Sadao Knodo was quoted as
saying that to expand the market further, we need new breakthroughs,"
says Rosenblatt. "Universal Display Corporation stands uniquely
positioned with an intellectual property portfolio of innovative
technologies that should provide the breakthroughs necessary to expand
the emerging OLED markets."
