I find it hard to see how you can be so certain in this case.

The certainty of your impression is unjustified. Nobody is certain of alternative futures: consider it a "default" condition of Homo Sapiens.<g>

The SBR stated that in All Probability the Japanese would have surrendered in October or earlier. I considered that 5 weeks was fair to the implication of the report.

Many, of course believe, without any doubt, that the war could have ended long before the bombs, if the U.S. had wished to prevail through diplomacy. Certainly these are important questions which have been considered by thoughtful people.

I have no desire to argue whether or not the 5 weeks is "accurate" or not. Projections of the future are notoriously subject to the vagaries of time, as perhaps you are aware.
