Mary, I think the dynamics to have the fastest processor have changed to some degree. I'll use myself as an example...

I upgraded both the kids computers for XMAS and elected to go with 1.2 Gigaherts machines with 40 GIG hardrives. Since I didn't need to upgrade the monitors they were less then 400 dollars a piece. We just use them for children's games, and they work great for that purpose.

The model of wanting/needing the best computer worked when your average home had one computer. But when you have 4 or 5 computers, upgrading every box to the fastest processor is a waste of money.
