Beyond stating the obvious that the unknown is unclear, I also was specifically stating what Japan would have done had we not dropped the bomb was unknown/unclear, and that a reasonable person can think either that they would have soon surrendered or that they would not have done so. If one thinks they would not have done so then IMO the argument against dropping the bomb is/was strong. If on the other hand you assume that they would have soon given up, and you think that this was known at the time but FDR ordered that the bomb be dropped anyway then criticism of his policy in this area is richly deserved.
