I also use OE5.5 for my cable modem e-mail address. I have configured Outlook to send e-mail but not to receive e-mail yet. I might get around to doing that later.

I don't have or use AVG's e-mail scanner. According to the link that you provided, they suggest that you compress your folders. I believe that this is a good idea.

AVG's e-mail scanner probably simply scans your OE inbox. If you keep a lot of mail in your inbox, this would slow down the scanning process. Moving mail from your inbox to a different folder should help. You can create new folders from the File/Folder/New... menu option.

After you clean out your inbox, compress your folders from the "File/Folder/Compact" or "File/Folder/Compact All Folders" menu option.
