There are quite a few things running in the background that you should not disable. Your computer probably is running several "manufacturer specific" programs that should not be
messed with. A couple of the links posted below have the instructions for finding and disabling unneeded apps. Find the instructions for using the startup tab in the System Configuration Utility (msconfig).

Links to most startup programs and ways to disable them. I am not suggesting that you need to disable any of them but I'm sure you can find some that aren't needed. You can start the application manually when you use them. If you find an app (such as realplayer) that does not need to be running it's always best to disable it through the program itself. You can open the program and look for options or preferences under the heading at the top of the program window.
