"The new mobile Pentium 4 chip, which sources familiar with Intel's plans say will launch in late March or early April, will run at 1.6GHz and 1.7GHz--faster than any other portable chip.... "

Maybe. The "faster than any other portable chip" part I mean. Assuming both companies stick to their present roadmaps, a dubious proposition at best, they will be pretty close as to actual clock speed by mid-year. Here is a table that JC graciously put together from AMD's recent Analyst conference...

Mobile roadmap:
* 2001Q4: 1300MHz
* 2002Q1: M1800
* 2002Q2: M1900
* 2002Q3: M2200
* 2002Q4: M2400
* 2003H1: M2800
* 2003H2: M3800 (100nm Hammer -- ~35W for M3800 and ~25W for M3600)

Note that a desktop M1900 runs at a closk speed of 1.6GHz. Assuming that the model rating for mobiles tracks with the one for desktops, it could mean that AMD is planning 1.9GHz or 2GHz mobiles by the end of this year...
