Describe where the 70% number comes from? Is it based on population numbers, geographic area, nation counting? How is the number arrived at?

I doubt the number is valid when you really look at it. But let's say for the sake of argument it is. America's economy is the largest in the world by far. Last time I read, something in the neighborhood of 10 trillion dollars. The next largest economy is Japan at around 3 Trillion dollars.

I believe our energy usage is a direct component of our wealth generating capacity. We don't consume energy. We transfer it from one form to another, we distribute it, create it, and channel it in productive ways largely based on market forces. That transfer of one form of energy to another is the engine which ignites the world's economy.

Can we become more efficient? Certainly, we can always improve in that regard. But to visualize us as an alcoholic dying of an energy consuming disease is foolhearty at best.

It's good to see liberal Democrats being swayed by arguments in favor of exploring for oil in Alaska. Maybe you should write Tom Dashle a letter describing your dissatisfaction at his blocking much needed reform.
