Technology sits on the shelf for decades, sometimes for centuries, waiting for economics to say "now is the time". I am never surprised by how fast technology moves, but rather how slow it is adopted as it waits for the the right economics. Hydrogen is a perfect example. The technology has been well understood for decades. as this century wears on the economics will come its way -- and it will move into widespread adoption exactly as the economics of its application become favorable, and not a minute before that.
