I have to disagree on the VW dependability. I have been driving a Jetta since `79. Just changed the original alt. still have original brakes and clutch. Only engine work done has been a couple of timing belts as regular maintance. I have to believe I got my $14k out of that car and still drive it every day to work. It's great in the snow and fun to drive in the Mnts. as well. They are pricey however.
