No one,with the exception of an emigre who wrote a book that was widely dismissed, thought that the Soviet Union was about to disappear. Ronald Reagan was the only politician whom I know to have entertained the notion. The fact is, Khruschev was "retired" for less liberalization than Gorbachev permitted, but the Kremlin needed someone who could deal with Reagan. They were afraid of SDI, for example. Why do you think they torpedoed the Reykjavik agreement if we would not give it up? In the end, the competitive pressure placed on the Soviet Union did it in now, instead of waiting another century or more........
