We will never know. Just as if Reagan hadn't caused the downfall of the Soviet Union, but instead had sought to make them our moral equivalents, and they would still be in business today, we would never know that the alternate course would have brought about the end of their tyranny.
But, on the other hand, maybe free trade will end the tyranny in China, and bring about a rule of law.
But, so far, things are off to a bad start. WTO is really causing them problems, and may accelerate their downfall. No one is shopping anymore, everyone thinks that with WTO, some great change is imminent, and there will be more goods in the streets. But, right now, there is only streets full of the same ol' goods, but no shoppers. |
