Kent: Maybe, but you and I will have nourished some large Oak trees before that happens. The alternative to his vision is the reality of FDM (frequency division multiplex) which is the core of Kestrel and Centerpoint. I understand Kestrel is in field trials with (rumored) SBC. FDM carries the same or more info per fiber for the same or longer distances as DWDM, but does so without (digital) overhead and without switches. Think of it as the cable-TV version of the InterNet: different stations to tune to. That's perfect for Metro connectivity, and its much much easier to filter radio frequencies than to filter optical wavelengths. Cao and OADM: right vision, wrong version. JMHO -Own
