Exact sales data of Itanium systems:

TecChannel.de reports that according to Kara Yokley, workstation research analyst from the International Data Group (IDC), in Q3, 2001, 1135 Itanium based workstations were sold. 650 came from HP, 385 from IBM and each 50 from Dell and Silicon Graphics.

Almost all of these systems went to Intel and Microsoft. Workstation analyst Pia Rieppo from Gartner Dataquest tells that only a handful of customers are not in direct relation with Intel or Microsoft.

Even worse, it was just in Q3 that Intel and Microsoft bought 80% of the Itanium systems they needed.

According to these analysts, the run on IA-64 systems will begin only with the 3rd processor generation (Madison).
