The Sun Bowl was a lot of fun.
It was a very exciting game. I don't know if you saw it on TV but the game was won in the final minutes.
...so I heard...
My father-in-law, who I had my fill of, wanted to leave early because he thought the grand kids were cold even though we all knew the kids were fine. The problem is that "he" dressed inappropriately even though we told him that he should dress warmer. Being as thick headed as he is, he went in a light jacket and moaned about the chill in the air for much of the game.
Then to make matters worse, when we finally gave in an attempted to leave early, he refused to follow us to the bathrooms. He pointed out a place to meet him. The group of us went off to pee and a minute later he realized that it was a good idea to use the bathroom too but never found us and proceeded to get himself lost where he had no idea where he was. We searched all over for him. Eventually we began receiving periodic updates on his location as he would call home to the ladies preparing for the New Years Eve Party. By the time we would get to the place he was calling from, he'd move on to another location. The women would call my cell phone saying he's at Gate C, now. We'd run over there and get a call saying, He's at Gate Q now...
We ended up missing almost all of the 2nd half. I caught the highlights on ESPN though...
A few observations of the game: Perdue had a much bigger band. It brought back memories of when I played trumpet in my school marching band. This band was phenominal though with all the fancy formations they did and the sound they produced.
Both sides had very friendly fans. I was amazed at the number of older alumni that had showed up.
Hats cost $20. I said, no thanks. Instead I paid for a $20 tee shirt. Not quite sure it was any better than the hat, but I just felt that the shirt had a little bit more to it for the money.
Beer was $5 for a 24 oz. can of Bud or Coors that they poured into a cup. Not bad when compared to Giant Stadium prices...
I began to wonder if WSU or Perdue were actually from Mexico. The tailgaters seemed to be 95% Mexican heritage. They had cool tailgating parties with huge amplifiers playing Selena songs and other types of mariachi music. Or maybe it was some sort of salsa. They sure do know how to have a party in the parking lot. I wish I could have hung out with them.
If all the years I've attended football games and baseball games I've never seen the food items like that were being sold and bought in the stadium. So many people chose corn on the cob over traditional hotdogs. Nachos were out selling peanuts and cracker jacks. Huge mexican hats out numbered baseball caps. It was no wonder it was a sell out. Fans had to spread out much further to see between the decorative sombreros.
My son really enjoyed the game. He was like a sponge soaking it all in. Asking intelligent questions and really observing everything that was going on.
The army jump team parchuted into the stadium. It was really cool watching them manuver in the wind and still nail the 50 yardline.
The coolest thing I observed was a NYC Police officer in his dress blues was walking on the sidelines as a visitor. I figured perhaps he had gone to Purdue or WSU ten years ago or so. Anyhow as he walked by, fans in the stands were applauding him from five feet way. They were reaching out to shake his hand and pat his back and was told "thank you" probably 1000 times by total strangers. He was probably just trying to make his way to the bathroom or something but people all around were stopping him and asking for a picture with him. It was very touching to watch. All this while the game got closer and closer in score. He was treated like a real hero.
It was a fun day that I wish I had gotten to see more of.
The New Years party was a lot of fun. Them Italian women make a ton of stuff to nosh on. All sorts of fancy names that I never heard of all ending with the letter "i" or "a". Struffala, Sfiggatelli, Orangini, Gasa Dehda, Spatinni, Canoli, Gigi, and a hole lotta other words that I was wasn't sure if they were food items or Italian curse words. I thought I was eating a plate of Ba Fongoo and talking to a guy named Stu Gotz...
Anyhow it was a lot of fun.
It's late. Gotta hit the sack. Back to work tomorrow. I was waiting for a few good stories but I guess I'll have to read them in the morning.
