R2 Technology adopts Adaptive Solutions image recognition technology for mammography system
=========================================================
BEAVERTON, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 1, 1997--Adaptive
Solutions Inc. (NASDAQ:ADSO) today announced that R2 Technology,
Inc., of Los Altos, California has selected Adaptive's CNAPS(TM)
parallel PC boards to handle image processing and image recognition
in R2's ImageChecker(TM) System. R2 has purchased nearly 100 units of
Adaptive's CNAPS/PCI boards, valued at over $250,000, for seed units
and international customer deliveries.
An important area of image processing and recognition is the
classification and processing of medical images, a task with
significant computing requirements and increasing pressure to reduce
costs. Reading and analyzing images from MRI scans, optical scans
(including Pap smears) or X-rays and searching for suspicious
structures such as cancer cells is a matter of life or death. At the
same time, this searching is time-consuming and error-prone and
involves "noisy," ambiguous data. R2 Technology has developed and is
testing the ImageChecker System, which uses Adaptive's 64-processor
CNAPS/PCI board to accelerate R2's proprietary classification
algorithms to flag suspect areas in mammograms. Adaptive's CNAPS/PCI
board allows scanning of an entire mammogram for suspicious
structures in 14 seconds, accelerating portions of R2's algorithms up
to 40 times faster than on a 200MHz Pentium(R) dual processor system.
Commenting on the announcement, James Pell, R2's president and
CEO said, "Adaptive Solutions' CNAPS technology provides the
horsepower needed by the ImageChecker(TM) System to meet the
computational requirements of this extremely demanding image
recognition application."
Dan Meub, president of Adaptive Solutions, added, "Our strategy
to make image information useful for business has two major areas of
focus. One is a horizontal approach of providing high performance
platforms for data extraction from images, to be used by OEMs and
VARs in a wide range of applications with demanding image processing
requirements. R2 Technology is an excellent example of Adaptive
executing on that part of our business strategy and we are very
pleased to be working with them. The second area is a vertical
market focus, with turn-key product in specific applications. We
will be introducing products aimed at the transportation industry
later this year as a part of that focus."
Adaptive Solutions, founded in 1988, has pioneered data parallel
processing for advanced pattern recognition, image processing and
OCR/ICR applications. The company currently designs and markets
advanced solutions for extracting useful information from images for
corporate-wide data management systems.
