I read in a recent National Geographic article about the Welsh that in a region of Wales the majority of the population has DNA that is distinctly different from the rest of Britain - but it is the same as the DNA of the Basques. The supposition is that these two groups are the only remnants from the original Europeans (after the ice age). However, whereas the Basques retained their language, the Welsh adopted the Celtic language and customs.
