Hovnanian Enterprises' Maryland-based Washington Homes unit said its new-home orders surged 650 percent in December from December 2000, to 75 homes. Overall, Hovnanian, which is based in New Jersey, said its new-home orders were up 12.3 percent at its six regional home-building operations.

The Muhlenkamp Fund has a 9 percent stake in home-building stocks such as Beazer Homes, Centex Corp. (CTX) and NVR Inc. (NVR). All of these stocks were up substantially at the end of the second quarter, and after Sept. 11 they rose even more as home-financing rates plunged. Dallas-based Centex reported record results for its second fiscal quarter and the six-month period that ended Sept. 30, and the company has said it expects record net earnings for the next three fiscal years.
