It is neither swampland, nor does it resemble an amusement park. If one is not moved by the monuments and public buildings of the Republic, so much the worse for one. One of my favorite places on earth is the Mall, looking toward the Capital at one side, and the Washington Monument at the other, just before going into the National Gallery. I love the quiet dignity of the Supreme Court; the modesty of the White House; the stateliness of the Lincoln Memorial; the beautiful simplicity of the Jefferson Memorial. I consider the park land around the Tidal Basin and Reflecting Pool to be among the most beautiful I have ever seen. If one drives along the George Washington Parkway, on the Virginia side of the Potomac, and looks over to the federal district, it is quite stunning........
