David, there's a retail boom in Hobbitville. Retail sales over the Xmas period were up 6% as measured by EFTPOS sales. Retailers chortling. Almost giggling [but that's a tv point of view]. But round the village, it's pretty hectic and there is little evidence of recession.

Waiting for this big financial collapse is like waiting for the second coming and The End is Nigh sandwich board guy to be right. Okay, it wasn't Ravi's 1991, nor all through the 1990s despite much worry, the techwreck and dot.bomb came and went. The doomsday Y2K was a fizzer. The end of the millennium chance was blown.

Now, here we are in 2002 and we are promised THIS year we'll collapse into a woebegone doom.
