Motorola Demonstrates Confidence in CDMA for China Market China Unicom Launches Commercial Service of its Nationwide CDMA Network BEIJING, Jan. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Motorola joined China United Communications Corporation (China Unicom) today in a ceremony at the Great Hall of the People and congratulated China Unicom for its official rollout of the nationwide Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) network, further demonstrating Motorola's commitment and confidence in China's growing CDMA market.
``As the largest mobile wireless system provider to China Unicom, Motorola's cooperation with China Unicom has been very successful in the past,'' said Ruey Bin Kao, Motorola vice president and general manager of China Global Telecom Solutions Sector. ``We will continue to work closely with China Unicom to offer the Chinese consumers with the latest, high-quality, CDMA products and services that meet different needs.''
At the landmark event, which celebrated the official launch of China Unicom's first nationwide CDMA network, guests were invited to try a live demonstration using a Motorola CDMA system and the company's newly-introduced, CDMA-enabled handset, the V8060. The demonstration offered a first-hand opportunity to appreciate the clearer voice transmission and other technological advantages of CDMA.
In December 2001, Motorola introduced the V8060, its first CDMA RUIM Card phone in China. During the trial of China Unicom's CDMA network, the V8060 handset model was the preferred choice of 80 percent of customers.
CDMA is a mature and advanced personal wireless communications technology. It is characterized by several advantages such as a larger capacity, clearer voice and higher-speed transmission, making it a popular choice for telecom operators worldwide.
The CDMA 1X technology, an advanced version of the technology, enables telecom operators to increase the current speed of network data transmission reaching 153.6kb/s. With increased speed, end-users can conveniently download music and data from the Internet to portable wireless devices such as handsets, laptop computers and Personal Data Assistants (PDAs). In addition, CDMA 1X increases current voice service capacity 1.4 - 1.6 times, enabling telecom operators to provide more value-added services for customers. CDMA 1X network will enter commercial operation in China later this year.
Motorola is a global leader of CDMA technology. Since the world's first deployment of a commercial CDMA network in Hong Kong in 1995, Motorola has been awarded with over a hundred CDMA contracts. The company currently ranks as the No. 1 CDMA equipment supplier in Asia.
In China, Motorola has gained a competitive advantage as an active promoter of CDMA technology. After the completion of China Unicom's first phase IS95 CDMA network, Motorola immediately began helping China Unicom with its more advanced CDMA 1X data transmission network. Among China Unicom's completed CDMA 1X networks under commercial trial in seven cities, Motorola was responsible for construction in Beijing and Nanchang.
After winning contracts with China Unicom valued at $407 million in May 2001, Motorola was awarded an additional contract worth $34.8 million to expand network capacity in Hebei Province, making the company the largest CDMA equipment supplier to China Unicom.
Motorola's achievement in handset area is equally remarkable in China. Motorola is the only foreign company among 19 manufacturers granted a license to manufacture CDMA handsets in China by China's State Development and Planning Commission and Ministry of Information Industry. Motorola has also signed agreements with several distributors for the company's first shipment of 2 million CDMA handsets.
Beijing's Olympic win, along with the country's WTO entry, provide China with unprecedented opportunities for growth. ``China definitely will become the largest CDMA market in the world,'' said Kao. ``Facing these golden opportunities, Motorola will continue to invest in China and to develop strategic partnerships with Chinese telecom companies, bringing consumers with smarter technologies and making their lives simpler.'' |
