Re: I'll take this to mean that you are quite impressed with Northwood

Intel's brand new Northwood, on it's next generation .13 process, with a die size of 146mm2 at .13 is about as fast (if the benchmarks are optimzed for it, and you run it on a dual channel motherboard) as AMD's .18 Athlon, built on AMD's old .18 process, running a less expensive single channel motherboard.

The Northwood is labeled 2200, while the AMD is labeled 2000.

The Northwood costs $670, has 2 listings on pricewatch, and Dell won't sell you one unless you take one of the overpriced white elephant Rambus boxes off their hands.

Athlon 2000XP costs $335, is into it's second page of listings on pricewatch, and can be configured with any one of a number of motherboard solutions to match the way you work.

Configured similarly, a Compaq 8000 with an Athlon 2000XP costs about $600 less than the Dell 8200 with Intel 2200.

But, as you say, performance is pretty much a tie between the two systems.

Congratulations!
