XAR Introduces Two Fully-Integrated, Lowest Power, CMOS CCD Image Signal Processors

Also Offers Widest Gain Range Available

FREMONT, Calif., June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- EXAR Corporation (Nasdaq:EXAR) announced today the availability of two single-chip, low power, complete Analog Image Signal Processors for Charged Coupled Device (CCD) video and imaging markets and applications. The XRD4460 operates at 5 Volts, and the XRD44L60 is optimized for 3.0 Volt operation.

The XRD4460/44L60 digitize images in video camcorders, video cameras, digital still cameras and copiers, as well as document and film scanners, before the image goes to the digital signal processor (DSP) or digital post processor.

The integration of the signal conditioning, gain, and digitization functions provided by the XRD4460/44L60 reduce part count, board size, power consumption and cost. The low voltage XRD44L60 device enables designers of portable video and imaging products to reduce system cost and enhance battery life due to the single-chip, low-power CMOS features.

Technical Description

The chip includes a correlated double sample and hold (CDs), the widest programmable gain amplifier (PGA) from 2 to 80, a low-power 10-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC), and automatic offset calibration. The PGA and offset calibration codes are controlled through a simple serial interface.

The device also features differential or single input option and power down, and a 15 MHz sampling rate when operated at 3 V and three-state digital output. The parts are manufactured in low-power CMOS technology. The low power operation is 250 mW at 5 Volts, and 150 mW at 3 Volts. In power down mode, the typical power dissipation is less than 1.0mW.

According to John Srarnek, Group Director and General Manager of EXAR's Imaging and Video Group, ``This is the first of a family of Image Signal Processors from EXAR for this exciting and dynamic market. In our future products we will continue to work toward higher integration of both horizontal and vertical functions in order to provide our customers with solutions that offer the most processing power available in the smallest footprint possible.''

Price and Availability

The XRD4460 is fabricated in CMOS and is available in 48-pin plastic TQFP package. Samples for each part are available now in 1,000 unit quantities for $5.95 from EXAR Corporation (Tel: 510-668-7000; FAX: 510-668-7010; exar.com).

An application board is also available.

EXAR Corporation designs, develops and markets innovative, system-oriented analog and mixed-signal integrated circuits for video, imaging, communications and silicon sensing.
