Re: NW is now in high volume production. AMD's XP2000+ is little more than a paper launch.
Given what Intel has been spending on FABs this year, we should be knee deep in Northwoods at this point.
So far, though, they are as scarce as the fabled 1.13GHZ Coppermine PIII was. Next to nothing on price watch, nothing from Compaq, and Dell won't let you have one of their few pieces unless you let them dump a rambus box on you - there is little risk of Dell getting more than a handful of orders.
Maybe the flood will show up next week, or the week after.
Why are the next northwood SKUs to be released slower parts, instead of faster ones? That's something of a puzzler, isn't it? Have binsplits, so far, been a little less than hoped? Are they having reliability problems with that amazingly thin gate oxide when they run the voltage up to where the chips have competitive performance?
Meanwhile, there seem to be plenty of Athlon 2000+ parts available. And since AMD isn't asking a ridiculous price for them, they're likely to sell some, too. |
