Excellent post.

jttmab and I were having a debate about the effect the atomic bombs had on ending the war. He held the Japanese were going to surrender very soon anyway and they had no real effect. I found it rather amazing that after doggedly and determinedly prosecuting their war for almost 4 years, the just coincidentally decided to surrender a few days after the second bomb. And that was after they had prepared their population for a to-the-death, last ditch, every-square-inch defense.
